Payment Tokenization Explained: How Tokens Keep Card Data Off Your Servers

10 July 2026 · Payixay Team

Every merchant that accepts cards has the same problem: the card number is valuable, and storing it makes you a target. Tokenization solves this by making sure you never hold the card number at all.

What a token is

A payment token is a substitute value that stands in for a card number. When a customer enters their card at checkout, the gateway encrypts the details and returns a token — a string that is useless to anyone who steals it, because it can only be redeemed for a charge through the gateway that issued it, by the merchant it was issued to.

The real card number is stored inside certified gateway infrastructure. On Payixay, that layer is provided by our partner Akurateco, whose technology is PCI DSS Level 1 certified — the strictest level of the card industry’s security standard.

Why this matters for PCI scope

PCI DSS obligations scale with how much card data you touch. A merchant that stores raw card numbers needs vaults, audits and evidence. A merchant whose checkout uses hosted fields or a hosted payment page never receives the card number — only the token — and stays out of PCI scope for card storage. For most businesses this is the difference between a self-assessment questionnaire and a compliance project.

What tokens let you do

  • Charge again without re-asking. Returning customers and subscriptions use the stored token, not a stored card.
  • Refund safely. Refunds reference the original transaction — no card number needed.
  • Survive a breach. If your database leaks, attackers get tokens they cannot use elsewhere.

What tokenization does not do

Tokenization protects stored data. It does not stop fraud at the point of purchase — a stolen card entered at your checkout still tokenizes successfully. That is why tokenization works alongside 3-D Secure authentication and real-time risk screening, not instead of them.

Payixay tokenizes every card transaction at capture on PCI DSS Level 1 certified partner infrastructure. See how card processing works.
